Visibility Control
Visibility Control
Control element visibility in the model to focus on specific analysis or clear the view.
Visibility tools
Three main operations are available in the visibility menu ():
- Hide selected - Hide only the elements you selected
- Hide others - Isolate and show only selected elements
- Reset visibility - Show everything again
Hide selected elements
Hide the elements you selected, keeping the rest visible.
How to use
- Select elements - Use selection tool to choose what to hide
- Open visibility menu - Click icon
- Click “Hide selected”
- Elements disappear from model
Show them again
Click “Hide selected” again to reveal those elements.
Note: Hide state is remembered, so you can toggle easily.
Use cases
- Hide temporary furniture
- Hide MEP installations during structural analysis
- Remove elements blocking the view
- Clear view for screenshot
Hide others (Isolation)
Show only selected elements, hiding everything else.
How to use
- Select elements you want to see - Can be one or many
- Open visibility menu ()
- Click “Hide others”
- Only your selected elements remain visible
Get general view back
Click “Hide others” again to show everything, or use:
- Reset visibility
- Press Escape
Use cases
- Analyze specific discipline (structure only, MEP only)
- Examine complete floor without obstacles
- Present a project subsystem
- Reduce visual load on complex models
Reset visibility
Restore all elements to original visible state.
How to use
- Open visibility menu ()
- Click “Reset visibility”
- All elements become visible again
Shortcut: Press Escape while exploring with modified visibility.
Category filters
Complement visibility tools with category filters in side panel.
Common categories
- Structure - Columns, beams, slabs
- Walls - Load-bearing and partition walls
- Doors and windows - Closure elements
- MEP - Mechanical, electrical, plumbing installations
- Equipment - Furniture and special elements
- Landscaping - Exterior elements
How to filter
- Open side panel (if closed)
- Find categories section
- Check/uncheck categories with checkboxes
- Model updates in real-time
Filter advantages
- More efficient than selecting individual elements
- Applies to whole project, not just selected
- Combinable with visibility tools
- Improves performance on large models
Analysis strategies
Disciplinary analysis
To analyze specific discipline:
- Use category filters to show only that discipline
- Or use “Hide others” if you already selected it
- Disable unnecessary subcategories
Analyze by floor
To work with specific floor:
- Use filters if “by floor” category exists
- Or select all floor elements
- Use “Hide others”
- Now analyze that floor without visual noise
Phase comparison
If model has different phases (existing, to build, demolish):
- Filter by phase
- Toggle visibility between phases
- Visualize before and after
Visibility history
System remembers recent changes:
- Last action - Can undo with Ctrl+Z
- Multiple changes - Saved in history
- Clear all - Clears history
Saving views with custom visibility
Saved views include visibility state:
- Adjust visibility as desired
- Use “Save view” (in views menu)
- Configuration saves exactly as is
- Loading that view restores all visibility
Combining tools
Visibility + Measurement
With isolated elements:
- Use “Hide others” to isolate
- Apply measurements without interference
- Numbers are clearer and more readable
Visibility + Sections
For complex sections:
- Hide unnecessary elements
- Create section plane
- Section is clearer and focused
Filters + Selection
Precise analysis:
- Filter by category
- Select specific elements from filtered list
- Use “Hide others” to isolate them
Visibility tips
- Start open - Begin with everything visible, then filter
- Use descriptive names - For saved views with visibility
- Document changes - Screenshot important views
- Save useful configurations - Views are reusable
- Experiment freely - Reset always returns to start
Common issues
Lost element and can’t find it
Solutions:
- Click “Reset visibility” to show everything
- Or press Escape multiple times
- Then search for element in category tree
Want to hide many elements in different categories
Solutions:
- Select each with Ctrl+Click
- Then use “Hide selected” once
- Or use category filters for each type
Element should be visible but I don’t see it
Solutions:
- Verify category isn’t filtered
- Confirm it’s not in hidden group
- Try resetting visibility
- Element might be far away - use “Center model”
Mastering visibility is key to efficiently navigating complex BIM models.
